Plate vs. Screen or тарелка vs. экран

Sakharov's literature uses the word экран=screen where you would expect тарелка=plate from Taylor and Dyson's work. Is this a real technical difference or a translation issue? Speculation: A screen could help lengthen the pulse duration, a goal Project Orion solved with pulse unit design. This would also reduce hoop stresses that led Taylor's group to go with a lipless flat plate.
